Gay Palm Springs, California

What was once famed “the playground of the stars” has now become the playground for the rest of us.  But, when you’re drinking your twisted martini poolside, who will be able to discern whether you have recently arrived from Peoria, IL or Hollywood, CA?  Since the 1930’s Palm Springs has been synonymous with glamour, wealth, relaxation, and outdoor recreation.  Today is it is a well know gay destination—styled the new Gay Mecca by some—and 35% of the year round residency is made up of a diverse gay and lesbian community.

What sorts of activities are available in this vast outdoor playground?  With both desert and mountain terrain surrounding the city, the options are endless: take a 4-wheeler out into the dunes in the morning and then go for a cool and rejuvenating hike in Mt. San Jacinto State Park via the Aerial Tramway in the afternoon.  Wind up your day enjoying live entertainment at one of the many bars or lounges, or get your dance on at a swinging nightclub.  Some other popular activities include swimming, horseback riding, rock climbing, cycling, and golfing.  In fact, Palm Springs is home to some of the most famous golf courses in the world.

Should you need to get out of the sun for a couple hours, Palm Springs also has a variety of museums, theatres, and casinos where you can see the sights or bet your luck.  And, when you want to get back outside, don’t forget to visit the Indian Canyons to learn about the cultural, natural, and geographical history of the Palm Springs area.

When it comes to selecting your lodgings, there are a great variety of gay-welcoming resorts and hotels to choose from—many of which are oases onto themselves—featuring pools, spas, casinos, golf courses, tennis courts, and other luxurious amenities.

If you fail to encounter any stars in the flesh while enjoying the playground of Palm Springs, wander along the Walk of Stars, found in the sidewalk which parallels Palm Canyon Drive.  There you will find the names of the rich and famous who have spent time in the city.  Such notables as Sophia Lauren, Frank Sinatra, and Sonny Bono, who also served as mayor of Palm Springs, are featured there.  Perhaps you’ll leave your mark as well?
