Gay Greece
Your classics and history courses didn’t teach you everything about Greece. Yes, yes, Greece is the birthplace of reason and democracy, but today’s Hellenic Republic it is also a hot and contemporary destination for your dionysian dreams come true.
The nation of Greece abounds with amazing historic sites. With 17 World Heritage Sites, 2 Wonders of the Ancient World (The Statue of Zeus at Olympia and The Colossus of Rhodes), and countless museums, archeological sites, ancient temples, and ruins, Greece will be sure to bring out the historian-traveler in you. Among the must-sees in the long list of notables are the Acropolis in Athens, the Temple at Delphi, and the ruins at Olympia. The Acropolis, or hill city, of Athens is amazing not only for the architectural feats and historical significance of the Parthenon and the smaller temples and monuments that sit atop it, but also for the wide sweeping view it offers of Athens. Located on the slope of Mt Parnassos, the ruins at Delphi also offer an impressive view of surrounding environs, which include the Gulf of Corinth and the valley below Mt. Parnassos. The main attraction at Delphi is the Sanctuary of Apollo but you will also find there an ancient stadium, a theatre and several smaller temples. Delphi is only a 2-3 hour drive from Athens. Finally, whether you’re a sports enthusiast, a history nut, or a Hellophile, the ruins at Olympia are a must. The birthplace of the Olympic games, Olympia is where the enormous Statue of Zeus once stood. You can see its remains there, as well as other temples and a stadium. Stop by the onsite museum to learn a little more about the ancient games.
The city of Athens itself is an interesting mix between ancient and modern. Although the smog can be a problem at times, the city is considered a great one for walking—many streets have been pedestrianized and sites of historical significance lie around every corner. If you’ll be spending some time in Athens, be sure to visit the archeological site of Agora Market—the market where Socrates once philosophized—as well as the modern day flea markets. The city is full of museums, gardens, temples, and ancient theatres, as well as great outdoor cafes and tantalizing restaurants. Gay venues are found mostly in the Kolonaki district.
To get away from the bustle of Athens, consider the romantic white washed villages of Santorini—a group of islands created by volcanic activity and located south of mainland Greece in the Aegean Sea. On Santorini you can find both hopping nightlife and secluded beaches. Head to Fira (also spelt Thira or Phira) for clubs and bars and to one of the smaller villages for dramatic views and sandy seclusion. Considered a jewel of Greece, the island promises not only romance and spectacular views, but more opportunities to explore the history and culture of Greece. So visit archeological sites or museums when you come in from the beach.
Dionysian culture lives on in the many festivals and events held in Greece throughout the year. Carnival Season, from February to March, lights up the country as each town holds its own celebration. One of the best parties is in Patras. In addition, Easter is an important festival in Greece as the population is primarily Greek Orthodox. Greek Easter celebrations involve a great deal of ceremony and celebration. Also noteworthy as you put together your itinerary is the Hellenic Festival. Held in Athens each year, the Hellenic Festival is an important celebration of music, drama, and culture, both past and present, both domestic and international, with performances taking place in ancient Greek theatres.
Mykonos, an island off the southeast of mainland Greece, is not only the most gay-friendly locale in Greece, but also one of the most popular destinations for anyone seeking an exhilarating nightlife. From smooth sandy beaches and pristine waters to 24 hour clubs and a completely cosmopolitan atmosphere, it is no wonder that Mykonos is one of the top destinations for European gay men. You will find gay and nude beaches throughout the island; in fact, the entire island becomes a gay-friendly resort during the tourist season. In addition to an unrivaled nightlife and ideal cruising beaches, Mykonos offers many sites and attractions for the lay archeologist, including day trips to the world renowned archeological ruins of Delos.
