Yes, Carnival is all it’s cracked up to be. The greatest party you’ll ever attend, Carnival is celebrated widely throughout the country with the largest festivals taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador de Bahia, and Recife—some of the more popular destinations for Carnival. Due to the diversity among and within these cities, each celebration is a little bit different. You will find music, costumes, dancing, and revelers in each but the rhythms, dancing, and themes may be a little different, depending on where you’re standing. (And the Rio Carnival features a Gay Ball each year!) The culture of Brazil is unique and diverse due to the confluence of Portuguese, Amerindian, and African cultures over time; this diversity is reflected in many aspects of life, including Carnival. Can’t make it to Carnival this year? Worry not! Several other great festivals take place in Brazil throughout the year including Bio Bumba, a folk festival in the Amazon, and Festa Junina, a harvest celebration which takes place during the Brazilian winter and involves a good deal of dancing, eating, and traditional dress and rituals. In addition, Gay Pride Festivals are held throughout the country with Sao Paulo taking the prize for the largest.
The gay scene of Brazil is concentrated in Rio and Sao Paulo—the two largest cities in the nation—where you will find a variety of bars, clubs, accommodations, and beaches. Specifically, Ipanema Beach in Rio comes highly recommended. You could spend a week in each of Rio and Sao Paulo and not begin to exhaust the excitement and sights available in each city. If you’re in Rio, be sure to visit one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the enormous statue of Christ the Redeemer, which overlooks the city. Not just a religious monument, the statue has become an icon for Brazil as a nation. Brazil is also known for the incredible soccer teams it produces—if you are a soccer fan, be sure to catch a game in the Rio stadium. With nearly twice the population of New York, Sao Paulo is the largest and most cosmopolitan city in Brazil. Offering top notch nightlife as well as great shopping and dining opportunities, Sao Paulo is a great place to visit if you enjoy the bustle and rush of a big city.
While Carnival may be what brings you to Brazil—justly so!—don’t stop exploring once you’re done partying; get out of the city and check out some of what the rest of the country has to offer! With the Amazon Rainforest in the north, and various beach and eco-destinations just off the coast, you have your pick of outdoor playgrounds in which to recover from the intensity of the festivals and nightclubs.
You can explore the Amazon by boat or by foot. Cruise companies will take you down the Amazon River—among the largest and longest rivers in the world. Or, you can take advantage of eco-parks/eco-adventure packages from which to take hikes, bird watch, or set out on day trips. And don’t miss the Eco-Gay Festival in Pantanal—a great place for wetland wildlife viewing—held annually in December. If a rainforest adventure isn’t your cup of tea, pay a visit to the breathtaking Iguazu Falls located on the border of Brazil and Argentina. A World Heritage Site, the falls dwarf Niagara, and the surrounding park is home to a number of rare and endangered species.
Considered a natural paradise, the Fernando de Noronha archipelago—a collection of 21 islands of the Atlantic coast of Brazil—is a national park accessible only by permit. But the main island features both eco-adventure opportunities and beach destinations where you can snorkel, swim, or just take in the beauty. If you are looking for just a day trip, the island of Santa Catarina has over 40 different beaches where you can spread out your beach towel.
