While there are places in Latin America (Mexico and points, south) that welcome gays, the general rule of thumb is discretion in your public outings.  Most of the large cities have a thriving, but usually underground, gay scene.

Even in the twenty-first century, and in spite of the tremendous strides that women have made, the traditional spirit of machismo is still the norm.  Having said that, though, your status as a foreigner is more of a personal threat than your sexual orientation.  North Americans especially should keep that in mind.

But what Latin American has to offer more than compensates for its faults.  Most of the people are very warm and beautiful and the countryside if wonderfully varied.
